Osteocyte Role in Bone Regeneration and Aging

The repair of critical bone defects remains a major clinical challenge. A better understanding of the mechanisms and cells regulating bone regeneration is essential to identify new treatments. Aging delays bone regeneration, a phenomenon associated with alterations in bone cells. Functional analysis of osteocytes, the most abundant bone cells, has been limited for a long time due to their location within the hard mineralized bone matrix. It is now established that osteocytes play key roles in skeletal homeostasis through their lacuno-canalicular network, and recent studies have suggested their possible involvement in bone repair.
